This is a combination of three antibiotics: ampicillin (a semisynthetic penicillin), sulbactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor), and clindamycin (a lincosamide antibiotic). The combination is sometimes used in clinical practice for treating complex infections requiring broad-spectrum coverage. **Ampicillin + sulbactam** works by: - Ampicillin binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis - Sulbactam inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise break down ampicillin, extending coverage against potentially resistant bacteria - Together they provide enhanced activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria **Clindamycin** works by: - Inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to 23S RNA of the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome - Providing excellent coverage against anaerobic bacteria This combination may be used for treating complex infections such as aspiration pneumonia, lung abscesses, and certain surgical site infections.
