Overview

Amprenavir is an oral small molecule antiretroviral drug in the class of HIV protease inhibitors. It was developed for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Amprenavir works by binding to and inhibiting the active site of HIV-1 protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication. By blocking this enzyme, amprenavir prevents cleavage of viral gag and gag-pol polyprotein precursors, resulting in immature, non-infectious viral particles[2][3][4]. Amprenavir was approved by the FDA in April 1999 but has since been discontinued as of October 2007[7]. It is a sulfonamide derivative and should be avoided in patients with known sulfonamide allergies[5]. The drug was primarily indicated for use as part of combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS.
