Overview

This is a four-drug combination of amprenavir, abacavir, lamivudine, and zidovudine, each of which is an antiretroviral used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Amprenavir is a protease inhibitor, while abacavir, lamivudine, and zidovudine are nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). The combination targets viral replication through inhibition of both the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme (by the NRTIs) and the HIV-1 protease enzyme (by amprenavir). This regimen has been evaluated in phase II/III studies, showing potent viral suppression and increases in CD4+ cell counts in both treatment-naive and experienced HIV-1 infected patients. The combination is generally taken orally and is intended to provide potent multi-mechanistic antiretroviral therapy[5][9].
