Overview

Amprolium hydrochloride (often referred to as aminopropion hydrochloride in some veterinary product listings) is a synthetic thiamine (vitamin B1) analogue that acts as a competitive inhibitor of thiamine transport. It is widely used in veterinary medicine as a coccidiostat to prevent and treat intestinal coccidiosis in poultry, cattle, sheep, goats, and other livestock. By blocking thiamine uptake in Eimeria species, amprolium hydrochloride prevents carbohydrate synthesis and starves the parasite of this essential nutrient. It is commonly formulated as a soluble powder or oral solution, either alone or in combination with other agents such as sulfonamides or ethopabate to extend its spectrum of activity.
