Ampydin

Ampydin is an immediate-release oral formulation of 4-aminopyridine (fampridine) developed by Neurorecovery, Inc. It is a small molecule potassium channel blocker designed to treat chronic functional motor and sensory deficits resulting from Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). By blocking voltage-gated potassium channels, the drug aims to improve nerve impulse conduction in demyelinated axons, which are characteristic of GBS. The FDA granted Ampydin orphan drug status for this indication in December 2006. While the active ingredient 4-aminopyridine is also used in extended-release formulations for multiple sclerosis, Ampydin represents a specific immediate-release development program for the GBS patient population.
