AMRS-001 is a recombinant human mesencephalic astrocyte‑derived neurotrophic factor (MANF) / cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF)–based growth factor being developed as a disease‑modifying biologic for neurodegenerative and ischemic indications, including Parkinson’s disease, myocardial infarction, and retinitis pigmentosa. It belongs to the astrocyte‑derived neurotrophic factor family and exerts broad cytoprotective and anti‑apoptotic effects, characterized preclinically as a MANF stimulant and inhibitor of tau protein–associated pathology and apoptosis, with the goal of preserving or restoring vulnerable neurons and cardiomyocytes under cellular stress. The program originated at the University of Miami and has been advanced by Amarantus Therapeutics/Amarantus MA and later MANF Therapeutics, with orphan-drug–oriented development particularly in retinal degenerative diseases.
