amsacrine

Amsacrine is a synthetic aminoacridine derivative and antineoplastic agent primarily used to treat acute adult leukemia. It acts as a cytotoxic agent by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, leading to double-stranded DNA breaks and inhibition of DNA synthesis. This results in cell cycle arrest (primarily in S and G2 phases) and subsequent cell death. Amsacrine is most effective against rapidly dividing cells such as those found in leukemias, but has limited activity against solid tumors.
