Overview

Amustaline (S-303) is a pathogen reduction agent developed by Cerus Corporation for use in the INTERCEPT Blood System for Red Blood Cells. It is used in combination with glutathione (GSH) to treat red blood cell concentrates. Amustaline is a small molecule that targets nucleic acids by intercalating into DNA and RNA and forming irreversible covalent adducts and crosslinks. This process inactivates a wide range of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, as well as donor leukocytes, thereby preventing transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD). The glutathione is included to minimize non-specific reactions with red blood cell components, preserving the viability and function of the cells for transfusion.
