Amyl acetate (also known as pentyl acetate) is an organic compound classified as an ester with the chemical formula CH₃COO(CH₂)₄CH₃ and a molecular weight of 130.19 g/mol. It is produced by the condensation of acetic acid and 1-pentanol but can also refer to esters formed from other isomers of pentanol. Amyl acetate appears as a clear colorless liquid with a characteristic fruity odor reminiscent of bananas or pears. It is primarily used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, varnishes, enamels, adhesives and sealants; in printing inks; and in rubber and plastic processing due to its fast-drying properties and ability to dissolve various organic compounds. In addition to industrial uses as a solvent and intermediate for organic synthesis or extraction processes in laboratories and manufacturing settings[5][6], it serves as a flavoring agent (imparting fruity notes in food products such as candy or beverages), fragrance ingredient (in perfumes or personal care products), and has been approved for use by regulatory agencies such as the FDA for indirect food contact applications[4]. Mechanistically it acts solely through its physicochemical properties—primarily solubilization—rather than any specific biological target.
