Overview

Amylase resistant starch + oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of acute diarrhea and cholera. The formulation consists of an oral rehydration solution (typically containing electrolytes and glucose) with added amylase-resistant starch—most commonly high amylose maize starch. Amylase-resistant starch is not digested in the small intestine but reaches the colon, where it is fermented by colonic bacteria to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs enhance sodium and water absorption in the colon, thereby reducing fecal fluid loss and shortening the duration of diarrhea. Clinical studies have shown that this combination significantly reduces both stool output and duration of illness compared to standard ORS alone in both adults and children with cholera or acute watery diarrhea[1][2][3][5].
