AN2898 ointment vehicle

AN2898 ointment vehicle is the inactive topical formulation used as a placebo control in clinical trials evaluating AN2898, a boron-based phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) inhibitor. Developed by Anacor Pharmaceuticals (later acquired by Pfizer), the vehicle was utilized in Phase 2 studies for the treatment of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis to establish a baseline for safety and efficacy against the active 1% AN2898 ointment. In these trials, the vehicle was typically applied twice daily. While the active compound AN2898 demonstrated clinical improvement in skin lesions, its development was ultimately discontinued in favor of the related boron-based compound AN2728, which was successfully developed and marketed as crisaborole (Eucrisa).
