Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anabasis aretioïdes extract is a plant-derived preparation obtained from the aerial parts of the endemic Moroccan species *Anabasis aretioïdes* (family Amaranthaceae, formerly Chenopodiaceae). The extract contains a variety of bioactive phytochemicals including high levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, condensed tannins, saponins, sterols, triterpenoids, fatty acids, and terpenoids. Key constituents identified by HPLC and spectrometric methods include cinnamic acid, sinapic acid, vanillin, rutin, and apigenin. The extract demonstrates significant antioxidant activities by multiple assays (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, RP), strong antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and notable cytotoxic (anticancer) activity against breast cancer cell lines. Mechanistic studies suggest these effects are due to inhibition of bacterial enzymes (such as beta-ketoacyl-[acyl carrier protein] synthase), antioxidant enzyme inhibition (NADPH oxidase), and induction of apoptosis in cancer cells via caspase-3 activation and modulation of cell signaling pathways. Additional activities include anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic potential. The extract is not a single pharmaceutical entity but a complex mixture of phytochemicals, and is typically studied in experimental or traditional medicine contexts rather than as an approved drug[1][2][3][6].
