Overview

Anaerobutyricum soehngenii CH-106 is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) consisting of an encapsulated, butyrate-producing anaerobic bacterium. Formerly classified as *Eubacterium hallii*, CH-106 is a tetracycline-sensitive isogenic derivative of the parental strain A. soehngenii L2-7. It is being developed by Amsterdam UMC in collaboration with Caelus Health and Wageningen University for the treatment of cardiometabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The therapeutic mechanism involves the production of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that modulates the gut microbiome and stimulates the production of intestinal glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), thereby improving glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. The strain has received a no-objection letter from the U.S. FDA regarding its self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status.
