anakinra

Anakinra is a recombinant protein drug that acts as an interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. It is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (including neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease), deficiency of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (DIRA), familial Mediterranean fever, and Still's disease. Anakinra works by blocking the activity of interleukin-1 alpha and beta at the IL-1 type I receptor, thereby reducing inflammation driven by these cytokines. It is administered via subcutaneous injection and is primarily indicated for patients who have not responded adequately to other treatments. The drug was developed and is marketed by Swedish Orphan Biovitrum[4][8]. Anakinra has also been studied for use in COVID-19 pneumonia requiring supplemental oxygen[2][5].
