Overview

Anakinra + disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) refers to the concurrent use of anakinra, a recombinant human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, with one or more DMARDs (excluding TNF blocking agents) for the treatment of moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases in adults who have failed previous DMARD therapy. Anakinra acts by competitively inhibiting IL-1 binding to its receptor, thereby decreasing inflammation and preventing joint damage. This combination is designed to enhance therapeutic efficacy, but direct evidence for increased benefit is limited, and combination with TNF-blockers (e.g., etanercept, infliximab) is contraindicated due to higher risk of serious infections[2][3][4][6].
