Anas platyrhynchos feather extract

Anas platyrhynchos feather extract is a biologic preparation derived from the feathers of the mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos). It is classified as a non-standardized allergenic extract and is used for diagnostic purposes. [6] Its primary use is in in-vivo allergy testing, such as skin prick or intradermal tests, to identify Type I hypersensitivity (allergy) to duck feathers in patients presenting with symptoms like allergic rhinitis, asthma, or conjunctivitis. [7] The extract contains proteins that, in sensitized individuals, bind to specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells, causing them to degranulate and release histamine and other inflammatory mediators. [7, 12] This results in a localized wheal and flare reaction, which confirms sensitization to the allergen. In addition to skin tests, related in-vitro blood tests measure the level of duck feather-specific IgE antibodies in a patient's serum. [1, 2, 5]
