Anastrozole + ibandronate is a combination therapy used primarily in postmenopausal women with early, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer to address both cancer recurrence risk and bone health. Anastrozole is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that reduces estrogen production by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, thereby decreasing the growth stimulus for estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells. However, anastrozole use accelerates bone loss and increases fracture risk due to reduced estrogen levels. Ibandronate is a third-generation nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, helping to prevent or reverse bone mineral density (BMD) loss associated with anastrozole therapy.
