Overview

Anastrozole + ibandronate is a combination therapy used primarily in postmenopausal women with early, hormone receptor-positive breast cancer to address both cancer recurrence risk and bone health. Anastrozole is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that reduces estrogen production by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, thereby decreasing the growth stimulus for estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells. However, anastrozole use accelerates bone loss and increases fracture risk due to reduced estrogen levels. Ibandronate is a third-generation nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, helping to prevent or reverse bone mineral density (BMD) loss associated with anastrozole therapy. Clinical studies have shown that monthly oral ibandronate significantly improves BMD and normalizes markers of bone turnover in patients treated with anastrozole[1][2][6].
