**Anatabine** is a minor bipyridine alkaloid found in plants of the Solanaceae family, including tobacco, tomato, eggplant, and pepper. Structurally related to nicotine, anatabine acts primarily as a **nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonist** and exhibits significant **anti-inflammatory activity**. Its anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by inhibition of STAT3 and NF-κB signaling, reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-6), and activation of the NRF2 and MAPK pathways. Anatabine crosses the blood-brain barrier and was developed as both a dietary supplement (Anatabloc, CigRx) and topical cosmetic for inflammatory conditions including rosacea and joint pain. It was researched for potential therapeutic use in Alzheimer's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, and intestinal inflammation. Commercial development was discontinued after regulatory and financial setbacks.
