Overview

Ancestim is a non-glycosylated recombinant methionyl human stem cell factor (SCF), produced in Escherichia coli, with an amino acid sequence identical to the natural human SCF except for an additional N-terminal methionine. It is supplied as a sterile, lyophilized powder for subcutaneous injection. Ancestim acts as an agonist of the mast/stem cell growth factor receptor (c-KIT), stimulating proliferation and mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow into peripheral blood. It is used in combination with filgrastim (G-CSF) to increase the number and mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells for collection and subsequent autologous transplantation, particularly in cancer patients undergoing myelosuppressive or myeloablative therapy[1][2][3][4][7]. Ancestim was developed by Amgen and later sold to Biovitrium (now Swedish Orphan Biovitrium)[2][4].
