Ancetate gel is an experimental intravaginal contraceptive formulation developed by the National Research Institute for Family Planning in China. It consists of acetic acid delivered in a thermoreversible hydrogel base composed of poloxamer 407. This specialized delivery system allows the product to remain in a liquid state at room temperature for ease of application, transitioning into a viscous gel at body temperature to ensure prolonged retention within the vaginal vault. The gel's primary mechanism of action is the acidification of the vaginal environment; by maintaining a low pH, the acetic acid acts as a spermicide, immobilizing and inactivating sperm to prevent fertilization. It is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials as a potential alternative to traditional spermicides like nonoxinol-9, with a focus on providing effective contraception with a reduced risk of vaginal mucosal irritation.
