AND017 is a first-in-class, oral hemoglobin-elevating agent developed by Kind Pharmaceutical. It acts by inhibiting hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase (HIF-PH), an oxygen-sensitive enzyme. This inhibition mimics low-oxygen conditions in the body, stimulating the bone marrow to increase red blood cell production. The drug targets multiple stages of the red blood cell life cycle and is being developed for several anemia-related indications, including sickle cell disease (SCD), anemia associated with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD) and dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (DD-CKD), cancer-related anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes anemia, and beta-thalassemia. AND017 has received FDA Orphan Drug Designation for SCD and has shown promising safety and efficacy in preclinical studies as well as positive results in phase 1 and phase 2 clinical trials for CKD-associated anemia[1][2][5][6][7].
