Overview

Andecaliximab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that selectively inhibits matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9), also known as gelatinase B. MMP9 is an extracellular enzyme involved in matrix remodeling and has been implicated in cancer progression, metastasis, and inflammatory processes. Andecaliximab was originally developed by Gilead Sciences for the treatment of various cancers (including gastric/gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma) as well as inflammatory diseases. More recently, it has been licensed to āshibio for development in rare bone disorders such as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), where it aims to block excess bone formation (heterotopic ossification). The drug has received orphan drug designation from both the FDA and EMA for FOP[1][3][4][6][8][9].
