androgen suppression + radiation therapy

This treatment regimen is a combination therapy used for patients with high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer. It consists of androgen suppression therapy—often referred to as total androgen ablation, which typically combines a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor agonist or antagonist with an androgen receptor antagonist—and external beam radiation therapy. The regimen was a central component of the NRG Oncology RTOG 0521 (Dana-Farber 05-043) Phase 3 clinical trial, which evaluated the efficacy of adding docetaxel chemotherapy to this standard-of-care backbone. The androgen suppression component works by depriving prostate cancer cells of the testosterone required for growth, while radiation therapy induces lethal DNA damage in the tumor cells. The combination is designed to provide both local control and systemic treatment of micrometastatic disease.
