Androstenediol is a naturally occurring steroid hormone that serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of testosterone and estrogen. It is produced in the adrenal glands, gonads, and other tissues by the reduction of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Androstenediol can be converted to testosterone via enzymatic pathways involving hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases. It exhibits weak androgenic activity compared to testosterone but has notable estrogenic effects due to its affinity for estrogen receptors. Historically used as a dietary supplement for purported benefits such as increased energy, muscle growth, enhanced athletic performance, sexual function improvement, and treatment of hypogonadism or delayed puberty in males. However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. Due to concerns about safety and misuse in sports doping (it is banned by WADA), androstenediol was reclassified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States; it now requires a prescription[2][3][4][5].
