Overview

Anemarrhena rhizome is the dried rhizome of *Anemarrhena asphodeloides* Bunge, a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) where it is known as Zhi Mu. It contains bioactive compounds such as steroidal saponins (notably timosaponin A-III) and xanthones (like mangiferin). Research indicates that Anemarrhena rhizome exhibits anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. In the context of oncology, it has been shown to inhibit cell viability and induce apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cell lines by increasing caspase 3/7 activity. Historically, it is used to treat conditions associated with internal heat and yin deficiency, including febrile diseases and diabetes mellitus.
