Anethole trithione is a small molecule drug primarily used to stimulate bile secretion and restore salivation, making it useful in the treatment of dry mouth (xerostomia), particularly in patients undergoing medication or radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. It is also used as adjunctive therapy for cholecystitis, gallstones, indigestion, and acute or chronic hepatitis. The drug has shown chemopreventive properties and is being studied for potential use in cancer prevention. Its mechanism of action involves increasing salivary secretion; however, it does not act as a simple cholinergic agonist like pilocarpine. Instead, it may modulate cyclic nucleotide signaling pathways in salivary glands but does not bind muscarinic acetylcholine receptors directly.
