Angelica archangelica extract is derived from the roots and sometimes other parts of the Angelica archangelica L. plant, a member of the Apiaceae family. It is traditionally used in European herbal medicine, mainly to support digestive function, treat mild gastrointestinal spasms, stimulate appetite, and as a remedy for bronchitis. Pharmacologically, the extract contains a complex mixture of bioactive compounds, including essential oils (primarily α-pinene, β-phellandrene, limonene, and others), furanocoumarins, coumarins, phenolic acids, and macrocyclic lactones. Animal and in vitro studies suggest potential anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antiviral, and possibly mild calcium channel-blocking activity. Mechanistically, components of Angelica archangelica extract demonstrate inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (raising neuronal acetylcholine levels), antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory cytokine modulation, antibacterial activity (notably against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), and mild cytotoxicity toward cancer cell lines, although clinical data are lacking to support definitive therapeutic use[1][3][5][6]. The extract may accelerate the formation of amyloid-beta peptides, so care is advised. It is typically administered orally as tea, liquid extract, or capsules; topical use is rare due to photosensitization risk.
