Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP) is a bioactive polysaccharide extracted from the root of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant *Angelica sinensis* (Dong Quai). It is being investigated for multiple therapeutic applications, including anemia and osteoarthritis. In the context of anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD), ASP has been shown to correct anemia in preclinical models by stimulating the production of erythropoietin (EPO) in both the kidney and liver. [1] This is achieved by stabilizing the hypoxia-inducible factor 2-alpha (HIF-2α) protein and blocking inflammatory signaling pathways involving GATA2 and NF-κB. [1] ASP also improves systemic iron availability by suppressing the production of hepcidin. [1] For osteoarthritis, ASP demonstrates chondroprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress, improving mitochondrial metabolism, and promoting the synthesis of proteoglycans in cartilage. [7, 9] This mechanism involves the activation of the PPARγ/SOD2 pathway and increased expression of aggrecan and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and its receptor. [6, 9]
