Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Angicin is a class IId bacteriocin and antimicrobial peptide produced by the opportunistic pathogen *Streptococcus anginosus*. It exhibits potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive pathogens, including *Listeria monocytogenes*, *Enterococcus faecium* (including vancomycin-resistant strains), and closely related streptococci. Angicin exerts its bactericidal effect by targeting the mannose phosphotransferase system (Man-PTS) on the surface of target bacteria. The N-terminal domain of Angicin recognizes and docks onto the Man-PTS, while its C-terminal alpha-helix inserts into the transporter, maintaining it in an open conformation. This action disrupts bacterial membrane integrity, leading to rapid cell death. Developed by researchers at Ulm University, Angicin is being investigated for potential clinical applications as a targeted antimicrobial agent and for food preservation.
