Overview

Anginera is a tissue-engineered, living cell-based product designed for the treatment of chronic myocardial ischemia and refractory angina. It consists of human neonatal fibroblasts seeded onto a bioabsorbable polyglactin mesh scaffold. Once surgically implanted onto the epicardial surface of the heart, the fibroblasts remain metabolically active and secrete a variety of pro-angiogenic growth factors and cytokines, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). This paracrine signaling is intended to stimulate the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) and improve blood flow to ischemic myocardium. Originally developed by Advanced BioSurface (later acquired by Shire), Anginera was investigated as a treatment for patients who were not candidates for traditional revascularization procedures like coronary artery bypass grafting or percutaneous coronary intervention.
