Anginex is a **synthetic 33-mer beta-sheet peptide** designed as an antiangiogenic agent and anti-tumor therapeutic. Its **mechanism of action** is to specifically bind to **galectin-1**, a glycan-binding protein that is highly upregulated in tumor-activated endothelial cells, critical for their adhesion and migration. Binding of anginex to galectin-1 disrupts endothelial cell adhesion, induces apoptosis (cell death) in these cells, and thereby inhibits tumor-induced angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels required for tumor growth)[2][7]. Anginex is also known to disrupt the plasma membrane of activated endothelial cells, contributing further to its cytotoxic, angiostatic effect[7]. Preclinical models show anginex inhibits tumor growth, reduces tumor microvessel density, and synergistically enhances the effectiveness of radiation therapy when administered prior to radiotherapy[2][4].
