Overview

Angiolix is a humanized monoclonal antibody (huMc-3) designed to target lactadherin, also known as Milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein (MFGE8). Lactadherin is a glycoprotein that promotes tumor growth by stimulating angiogenesis, the process of new blood vessel formation. By binding to lactadherin and blocking its interaction with integrins (such as alpha-v beta-3 and alpha-v beta-5) on endothelial cells, Angiolix inhibits the development of the tumor's vascular supply and induces programmed cell death (apoptosis) in existing tumor-supporting blood vessels. Originally developed by Somanta Pharmaceuticals, the drug was acquired by Access Pharmaceuticals in 2008. It was primarily investigated as a targeted antineoplastic therapy for various types of cancer and solid tumors.
