Angiotensin IV (Ang IV) is an endogenous hexapeptide hormone derived from the renin-angiotensin system. It is formed from Angiotensin III by aminopeptidase M. Ang IV acts as a specific agonist for the AT4 receptor, which has been identified as insulin-regulated membrane aminopeptidase (IRAP). This receptor is widely distributed in various tissues, including the brain, kidney, adrenal gland, lung, and heart. Ang IV plays a role in cognitive functions, notably enhancing learning and memory and reversing memory deficits in animal models. In the kidney, it influences renal cortical blood flow and decreases sodium transport in proximal tubules. Its mechanism of action involves modulating glucose uptake by affecting GLUT4 trafficking and potentially prolonging the action of endogenous promnestic peptides through IRAP inhibition. Research is ongoing into its therapeutic potential, particularly in neurological and renal disorders.
