Anhydrovitamin A is a small molecule metabolite of vitamin A (retinol), formed through the dehydration of its hydroxyl group. It belongs to the class of sesquiterpenoids and is also categorized as one of the retinoids. Anhydrovitamin A can be produced naturally in the body or during food processing and storage due to exposure to heat or light[1][5][6]. Its structure features three consecutive isoprene units and has the molecular formula C20H28[1][5]. The compound has been studied for its biological activity; it can reversibly inhibit certain effects dependent on retinol and related metabolites in lymphocytes. Specifically, it blocks B lymphocyte proliferation and T cell activation by interfering with intracellular signaling pathways distinct from those targeted by immunosuppressants like cyclosporine A[8]. While its precise mechanism remains under investigation[6], research suggests that it may impact immune cell function as well as broader aspects of vitamin A metabolism.
