Mechanistically, it presents horse allergen proteins to the immune system; in diagnostic use it provokes an immediate hypersensitivity response mediated by allergen-specific IgE on mast cells, while repeated therapeutic exposure in immunotherapy is intended to induce immune tolerance, including modulation of allergen-specific IgE and IgG responses and regulatory T-cell activity.
