Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anipryl is a veterinary prescription medication containing selegiline hydrochloride, a selective and irreversible monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitor. Manufactured and marketed by Zoetis, it is FDA-approved for use in dogs to treat canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) and uncomplicated pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH), also known as Cushing's disease. The drug functions by inhibiting the MAO-B enzyme, which is responsible for the catabolism of catecholamines, particularly dopamine, in the central nervous system. By preventing this breakdown, Anipryl increases dopamine levels in the brain, helping to alleviate symptoms of age-related cognitive decline and neurological dysfunction. It is the first and only medication approved by the FDA for canine cognitive dysfunction and is also used off-label for similar conditions in cats.
