Aniracetam is a nootropic drug of the racetam class, primarily used to ameliorate memory and attention disturbances associated with cerebrovascular diseases and degenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia[2][5][7]. It acts as a positive allosteric modulator of AMPA-type glutamate receptors, enhancing synaptic plasticity by slowing receptor desensitization and deactivation, which leads to improved cognitive function[4][6][8]. Aniracetam also modulates metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) and increases cholinergic activity in key brain regions including the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and striatum[4]. Additionally, it has been shown to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), supporting neurogenesis and synaptogenesis. Its metabolites may contribute to its effects by increasing acetylcholine release via stimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors[5]. Aniracetam is not approved for use in the United States but is available as a prescription drug in some European countries.
