Overview

Anise oil is an essential oil extracted from the fruit of *Pimpinella anisum L.*. It is primarily composed of anethole, which is its major phenylpropanoid component. This natural product exhibits a range of biological activities, including antimicrobial effects against various microorganisms such as *Ralstonia solanacearum*, *Staphylococcus aureus*, *Escherichia coli*, *Candida albicans*, and *Aspergillus niger*. Anise oil also possesses antioxidant properties and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by reducing proinflammatory markers. Research indicates its potential to stimulate cell growth in fibroblast cells, suggesting applications in topical wound healing. Furthermore, it can enhance the antifungal activity of other agents like nagilactone E by promoting intracellular retention and accelerating cell wall damage. Anise oil is approved for use as a sensory additive in animal feed for poultry and horses, where its safety and efficacy have been evaluated. However, it is noted to cause adverse effects at higher doses in some species, and due to its estragole content, it is classified as suspected of causing genetic defects and cancer, and is an irritant to skin and eyes.
