Overview

Anise seed (*Pimpinella anisum* L.) is an aromatic herb native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia, widely utilized in traditional medicine, culinary applications, and dietary supplements. The therapeutic properties of anise seed are primarily attributed to its essential oil, which is rich in bioactive phenylpropanoids, most notably trans-anethole, along with p-anisaldehyde and estragole. These compounds exhibit a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and gastroprotective effects. Preclinical studies suggest that anise seed extracts and its active constituents can modulate transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, protect against drug-induced neurotoxicity and hepatotoxicity, and support metabolic health.
