Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Anise seed extract** is a botanical extract derived from the seeds of *Pimpinella anisum*. The extract contains diverse active constituents, notably trans-anethole, estragole, para-anisaldehyde, and methyl chavicol, which contribute to its pharmacological properties. It has traditionally been used for **digestive issues**, respiratory problems, menstrual discomfort, menopausal symptom relief, antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral), antioxidant effects, anti-inflammatory action, muscle relaxant properties, and analgesia for migraine[5][1][3][4][7]. Mechanistically, the extract exhibits estrogen-like effects, muscle relaxation (tracheal and smooth muscle), inhibition of gastric acid secretion, modulation of neurotransmitters (antidepressant), and broad-spectrum antimicrobial action. Clinical evidence is strongest for the management of mild to moderate depression, protection against stomach ulcers, and reduction of menopausal hot flashes; however, large-scale trials remain limited[1][5][6][3]. The extract is typically administered orally but can also be used topically, or as an ingredient in sprays for lice removal.
