Overview

Anisodine is a tropane alkaloid naturally occurring in plants of the *Anisodus* genus, such as *Anisodus tanguticus*. It functions as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, chemically related to scopolamine but containing an additional hydroxyl group. In China, anisodine is primarily utilized for its ability to improve microcirculation and its anticholinergic effects. It is indicated for the treatment of migraine, acute circulatory failure (shock), and organophosphate poisoning. In the field of ophthalmology, it is specifically used to treat conditions such as ophthalmoplegia (paralytic strabismus) and ischemic optic neuropathy, often administered via peribulbar or retrobulbar injection to enhance local blood flow and nerve recovery. The First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has been a key institution in the clinical development and application of anisodine for ocular nerve paralysis.
