Anisomycin is a pyrrolidine antibiotic produced by Streptomyces griseolus (and also reported from S. hygrospinosus and S. roseochromogenes). It acts as a potent inhibitor of eukaryotic protein synthesis by binding to the 60S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting peptidyl transferase activity, thereby blocking translation. At higher concentrations, it can also partially inhibit DNA synthesis. Anisomycin is widely used in research as a tool to study protein synthesis, signal transduction pathways (notably activating stress kinases such as SAPK/JNK and p38 MAP kinase), apoptosis induction in cancer cell lines, and memory consolidation processes in neuroscience models. It has antifungal, antiprotozoal, antiparasitic, and antineoplastic properties but is not approved for clinical use[1][2][3][4][6][7].
