Anisotropine methylbromide is a quaternary ammonium compound and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, classified as an antispasmodic. It was introduced in the early 1960s as an adjunct treatment for peptic ulcer disease, with the intent of providing greater specificity to the gastrointestinal tract compared to other anticholinergics, though this selectivity was later questioned. The drug acts by inhibiting muscarinic actions of acetylcholine on smooth muscle and exocrine glands, leading to reduced motility and secretory activity in the gastrointestinal system, decreased tone in the ureter and urinary bladder, slight relaxation of bile ducts and gallbladder, inhibition of salivary/bronchial secretions, pupil dilation, increased heart rate at lower doses, and decreased GI/urinary tract motility at higher doses. Its use has been largely replaced by more effective agents for peptic ulcer disease but it may still be available in some countries or as part of combination products[1][3][5][7].
