Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ankaferd Hemostat (also known as Ankaferd Blood Stopper or ABS) is a unique, standardized herbal extract used primarily as a topical hemostatic agent. Developed in Turkey, it is composed of a specific mixture of five medicinal plants: *Thymus vulgaris* (thyme), *Glycyrrhiza glabra* (licorice), *Vitis vinifera* (grape), *Alpinia officinarum* (lesser galangal), and *Urtica dioica* (stinging nettle). Unlike traditional hemostats that act on the classical coagulation cascade, Ankaferd Hemostat induces the rapid formation of a protein network in the blood that serves as a focal point for erythrocyte aggregation. This mechanism is independent of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X, making it effective even in patients with primary or secondary hemostasis disorders. Beyond its hemostatic properties, the product has demonstrated anti-infective, anti-neoplastic, and wound-healing activities in various clinical and preclinical settings, including the management of gastrointestinal bleeding, surgical hemorrhages, and oral mucositis.
