Overview

Annatto leaf tea, also known as achiote or urucum leaf tea, is a traditional herbal infusion prepared from the leaves of the Bixa orellana tree, native to tropical regions of the Americas. In folk medicine, the tea is consumed for its purported diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and digestive properties, and is commonly used to treat conditions such as diarrhea, heartburn, and urinary tract disorders. However, excessive consumption or intoxication can lead to severe acute kidney injury (AKI) and fluid and electrolyte imbalances, potentially exacerbated by its strong diuretic effects.
