Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anogeissus leiocarpus extract is a plant-derived preparation obtained from various parts of Anogeissus leiocarpus, commonly known as axlewood or chewing stick. It is traditionally used in African folk medicine for the management of multiple ailments, including skin diseases, fever, diarrhoea, malaria, stomach infections, and bacterial infections. Scientific studies show that extracts (from leaves and stem bark, using solvents such as methanol, ethyl acetate, water, n-hexane, and dichloromethane) contain bioactive compounds such as **tannins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, phytosterols, quinic acid, shikimic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, lupeol**, and others. These extracts display several pharmacological actions, notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic (via inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase), enzyme inhibition (acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, tyrosinase), antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. Lupeol is a key anti-inflammatory compound found in stem bark extracts. The extract has demonstrated activity against diabetes mellitus, ulcerative colitis, hypertension, erectile dysfunction, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria, and shows promise for cosmeceutical applications due to tyrosinase inhibition[1][2][3][4][5][6].
