Overview

Anserine is a **naturally occurring dipeptide** composed of beta-alanine and 3-methylhistidine. It is a methylated derivative of carnosine, primarily found in skeletal muscles and brains of birds, fish, and some mammals, as well as in human kidney tissue[1][3][4][5][6]. Anserine has several reported **biological properties**, including *antioxidant*, *pH buffering*, *metal ion chelation*, *anti-inflammatory*, and *anti-aggregation* effects[3][5][7]. A notable mechanism is its inhibition of the enzyme p300 histone acetyltransferase, which has been associated with anti-inflammatory and potential cardioprotective effects[5]. Some studies also report potential *anti-fatigue*, *anti-obesity*, and *cognitive-protective* actions, though anserine is not an FDA-approved pharmaceutical and is typically marketed as a dietary supplement or studied as a nutraceutical ingredient[1][5][7][9].
