Antarctic krill oil is an extract derived from the Antarctic species of krill (Euphausia superba), a small shrimp-like marine crustacean. It is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are mainly bound to phospholipids rather than triglycerides as in fish oils. Antarctic krill oil also contains the antioxidant astaxanthin and choline-containing phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine. The proposed mechanisms of action include anti-inflammatory effects via modulation of eicosanoid synthesis, reduction of blood triglyceride levels, improvement in lipid profiles, and potential antiplatelet activity that may slow blood clotting. It is marketed primarily as a dietary supplement for cardiovascular health (e.g., hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia), dry eye syndrome, osteoarthritis symptoms relief, and general wellness; however, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited[1][2][4][9].
