Overview

Anthracimycin is a tricyclic macrolide natural product originally isolated from a marine-derived *Streptomyces* bacterium (specifically strain P11-23B). Discovered by researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, it was initially recognized for its potent bactericidal activity against Gram-positive pathogens, including methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) and *Bacillus anthracis*. More recent research has identified anthracimycin as a novel inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. In the context of oncology, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), it has demonstrated the ability to inhibit cancer cell invasion and target cancer stem cells, suggesting potential as a targeted antineoplastic therapy.
